Château des Vagues

Where history meets the high tide

Welcome to Château des Vagues, a unique blend of classic elegance and functional charm, situated in the heart of the Vendée region in France. Located near the popular historical park, Puy du Fou, the Château offers an ideal base for exploring the rich history and beautiful landscapes of the Vendée.

The Château welcomes guests from Easter to All Saints’ Day (mid-April to the end of September). Accommodation is offered in two forms: the Château and an independent Gîte. A fully independent gîte located in the East wing of the property, perfect for groups seeking autonomy.

Guests staying at Château des Vagues have access to spacious communal areas on the ground floor, including a grand salon, a formal dining room, and a games room. Outside, they can enjoy a delightful heated swimming pool and a tennis court set within a picturesque two-hectare (2ha) wooded park. The sunny terrace is perfect for relaxing or enjoying a convivial meal, complete with the provided barbecue facilities.

The property’s history is deeply rooted in the region, having been built around a 15th-century Vendéen manor house that once belonged to Admiral Alquier. The current classical structure was founded in 1825. The current owners, the Count and Countess de La Laurencie, undertook a complete restoration of the property in the early 2000s following a fire. Its location makes it easy to access local leisure spots and historical sites across the Vendée, and the Château offers recommendations for local favourite restaurants and takeaway/caterers.

History and Culture

The most famous attraction nearby is the Puy du Fou theme park (about 12–15 minutes away), renowned as the “Best Theme Park in the World” for its immersive, spectacular historical shows and reconstructed period villages. While there, visitors can also experience the grand nighttime show, the Cinéscénie or Les Noces de Feu. Beyond the park, the region is rich in historical sites. You can visit Château de Tiffauges, the largest medieval fortress in Western France, or the Logis de la Chabotterie, which offers insight into 18th-century country life. Nearby towns like Pouzauges are recognised as Petites Cités de Caractère (Small Towns of Character), featuring medieval architecture, historic ruins, and charming shops.

Food and Wine Culture

The Vendée region, while not a primary wine appellation, offers fantastic local produce and a distinctive local wine known as Fiefs Vendéens. Look for local producers offering tastings (dégustation) of these wines, known for their fresh, light character, which pairs perfectly with local seafood. The local cuisine emphasises the area’s dual identity—both coastal and inland. The region’s culinary signature is the Mogettes de Vendée, white kidney beans often served with local jambon de Vendée (cured ham). Being close to the coast, fresh seafood, including oysters and mussels, is readily available. For a sweet local delicacy, try the Brioche Vendéenne, a rich, braided sweet bread.

Nature and Recreation

The surrounding Vendée Bocage (hedged farmland) offers beautiful opportunities for outdoor activities. The Vallée de Poupet, just 15 minutes away, offers shaded picnic areas, fishing, and rentals for canoes and kayaks. This area also hosts the annual Poupet Festival in July. The region features numerous signposted trails for hiking and mountain biking, including scenic paths around the Sèvre valley. Enjoy various water activities at nearby lakes such as the Lac de la Touchegray or Lac de la Bultière. For a day trip, the Atlantic Coast and its sandy beaches (such as Les Sables d’Olonne) are approximately one hour away, offering a chance for activities like sand sailing. The Château is conveniently situated on the edge of the village, with a boulangerie and supermarket within walking distance.

what we love

– Convenient Location The château is located in the village with the bakery and supermarket “à deux pas” (a stone’s throw away), while the extensive grounds maintain privacy
– Exceptional cleanliness consistently rated 10/10

keep in mind

– Shared Pool Potential if only renting the Château, or only the Gite, then the pool and tennis court are communal. If you rent the whole property, it will be all private for your group
– As this is a charming, historic property, you may occasionally encounter minor wear and tear
